My First Project

first-clay-project

My first project at CCA is a simple but time consuming one. To start I must construct 40 rectangular blocks. These blocks can very from 1/8 inch to 3 1/2 inches on any side. They may not be perfect cubes, and the edges must be as straight as possible.
Once these have been constructed I must sort then into three groups: dominate, subdominate, and subordinate.

  • Dominate pieces visual weight demands that you look at them first
  • Subdominate pieces take second place to dominate pieces
  • Subordinate pieces are interesting because they are the least dominate, but remove them and the entire piece fails or looks unfinished.

After sorting all the pieces, I must construct 10 rectilinear objects. Basically, assembling one of each of the above into a form where all the pieces meet at right angles. We can use three techniques to do this: piercing, wedging, and cradling.

Next Monday we will chose three of our best for critique, and from critique our best piece, which will be constructed much larger in foam.

I will post photos as I build my pieces, choose my top pieces, and my final piece as they are built.
